Should You Pay Off Debt or Invest First?

By Mr Umer5 min readUpdated October 2026

A framework for comparing the guaranteed return of debt repayment with the uncertain return of investing.

The core comparison

Paying off debt gives a guaranteed return equal to the loan's interest rate. Investing offers a possible, uncertain return. The higher your interest rate, the stronger the case for repaying debt.

High-interest debt first

Credit card debt at 20% or more is very hard to beat with any investment. Clearing it is usually the best use of spare cash, after a small starter emergency fund.

Take free money

If your employer matches retirement contributions, that match is an immediate return. Many people capture the match first and then attack expensive debt.

Low-interest debt

Loans at low rates, such as some mortgages, may not need aggressive repayment. Splitting spare cash between extra repayments and investing is a reasonable middle path.

Think about peace of mind

Being debt-free reduces stress, and that has real value even when the maths is close.

Run the numbers

Compare payoff time in the credit card payoff calculator with growth in the compound interest calculator to see both sides.
